“”Word” gives voice to frustrations, but also to dreams. The questioning spirit and synchronized energy of its performance are particularly galvanizing.” — The Washington Post
With brutal honesty and raw physicality, Word Becomes Flesh is a series of letters from a young man to his unborn son. The award-winning team returns to Theater Alliance for this encore production that uses hip-hop, dance, and music to explore what it means to be a black man in the 21st century. First presented during Season 13, this highly praised production received 5 Helen Hayes Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Ensemble.
Word Becomes Flesh is part of the Word Becomes Action Festival, a series presenting new works by local artists, community-based workshops, and conversations that explore and articulate the diversity of the African Diaspora. Theater Alliance will partner with local nonprofits to provide resources to transform words into tangible actions that make real change!

“”Still Life with Rocket” is easily one of the most innovative pieces I have seen in the D.C. area recently.” … “As is expected from powerful theatre like this, “Still Life with Rocket” leaves you searching long after you’ve left.” – MD Theatre
With Etta’s death rapidly approaching, her grown children return home, reviving the wild, reckless, and brutal games of their youth. When long-buried secrets are resurrected, the games become battles that threaten to tear the family apart. A raucous new performance event that blends theater, dance, and art installation, Still Life with Rocket delves into the fragmenting mind of a dying matriarch and the strength of the family she created.
Still Life with Rocket is a unique theatrical experience, where during parts of the performance you will be asked to stand or walk. These brief moments will be similar to walking through a gallery or museum.
Audience entry will be staggered in 10 minute time slots in groups of 6-8 people. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time slot. Late admittance is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of house management.

Occupied Territories is the story of the complexity and persistence of memory, decades after war. With text sparked by Trojan Women, Occupied Territories exposes a world where a man must finally face his past, his God, his family. Highly physical, Occupied Territories tears away easy boundaries to question how bodies, minds, and souls are vast territories altered by our relentless history of War.

Hughes chronicles and celebrates the Nativity, while also celebrating the miracle of Blackness. Hughes’ retelling of the Nativity Story encourages audiences to find joy and beauty in being Black, which will ultimately lead to peace and hope for the world and will be one’s salvation. This timeless story asks audiences to look inward and find the wonder in life itself.

Three freedwomen travel through the American south in the 1860s with a medicine show, but unlike other snake oil salesmen of the day, these mysterious women give away their healing potions in an attempt to cure a dangerous disease that threatens to destroy future generations. A devised work of dance theater, The Trans-Atlantic Time Traveling Company combines vaudeville, sampling culture and time travel to engage the audience in a conversation about what it means to be free and ways we can move towards an equitable and just society.
